Either way, it's to late in the process to switch to a new engine at this point, but as a MMO type game, it's possible in future iterations but won't be for quite some time.
My guess is that they are waiting for Unreal Engine 4 and the next gen system. Right now, they are making the content, the network code and systems that will make Eve and Dust talk together ... They've already said that Dust 514 has a 5 year plan, and that would with current rumors, surpass the PS3's life cycle as it stands
Switching to UE4 would require work, but much less then switching to a completely different engine ... and with the known ... performance issues that UE3 has with the PS3, I'm sure Epic has gone to a lot of work to make the engine much more flexible towards the hardware it's running on (I think I remember reading somewhere that it'll also be usable for smartphone game development).
So currently ... get Dust 514 off the ground, get the gameplay and systems to simply work. Add content, in directions such as new game modes and non-tempered planets in the future.
Once PS4 comes along, the transition will be gradual, but we'll see more weapon models, ship models, more vehicle in general and much bigger maps with diverse landscapes as well as more people per map, etc.
That's my ... prediction ... |

They would have done good to use something like the Havok engine, which is proven to work extremely well on the PS3. The Unreal engine just doesn't seem to play well with the PS3 architecture. My guess is that before Sony bought the exclusivity, the 360 was the main focus and thus the Unreal engine would have performed admirably, while us PS3 users would have gotten the shaft, as like the olden days...
Consoles in general wasn't a main focus back then ... it was a goal, but not the focus. PC gaming is still relevant, but now a days, console gaming is larger, that's why I'm sure Epic will be working much more closely with Sony, Microsoft, etc to make UE4 work as best as possible |

I WOULD BE HAPPY WITH 48 PLAYERS....THATS JUST ME I GUESS. BUT 128 WOULD BE GREAT. I WANT THAT TOO. you'll be lucky with 16 v 16 that works properly
Not official but it seems that current limit will be 24 vs 24
If you go in the PSN store and look at AUR purchase details, it mentions that the game will support up to 48 players. I'm guessing that limit will be implemented in next build if mentioned in PSN store |
